Choral Evensong

Choral Evensong, also known as Evening Prayer, is offered at Trinity Cathedral twice a month, usually on the second and fourth Sundays, at 6pm. The service makes use of the ancient poetry of the Church set to beautiful music;  some of it hundreds of years old, some of it new. The Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida sings much of the service, including psalms (sung to Anglican Chant) and canticles (The Song of Mary and The Song of Simeon). A regular Evensong lasts around forty-five minutes; Festal or Solemn Evensong (with sermon) lasts around an hour. All Evensongs are followed by a reception in Cathedral Hall.

The service dates back to the Reformation, arising as a combination of the old Catholic Offices of Compline and Vespers. It has been sung daily ever since in Cathedrals, Churches and Colleges throughout the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a part. Evensongs at Trinity Cathedral make use of both the Book of Common Prayer of 1662 (still the official Prayer Book of the Church of England) and the 1979 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

The next Choral Evensong is on June 25 at 6pm.

This Evensong commemorates the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philip Telemann.

Click below to watch a complete Choral Evensong service from Trinity Cathedral. The first choral piece in the video is an introit, celebrating the Feast day on which the Evensong was held. Most Evensongs begin with the opening Preces ("O Lord, open thou our lips") [5:06]. The order of service can be downloaded from here.

All the images in this video were shot in the cathedral.  The still photos (edited into the Psalm [10:30] and Postlude [45:18]) showcase the stained glass windows and other sacred artworks in the building.
