Interim Director of Music

Dr. John McCarty

Dr. McCarty earned his undergraduate degree in voice and vocal music education from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN), his master's degree in choral conducting from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN), and his doctorate in choral conducting from James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA). He has presented at professional conferences, conducted honors choirs, and led workshops throughout the East Coast of the United States, most recently presenting his research on applying adult learning theory in the rehearsal setting at the ATINER Conference in Athens, Greece. Dr. McCarty is currently teaching in the Department of Performing Arts & Industries at Miami Dade College in Kendall and the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Miami. In addition to his teaching, he was recently named as the assistant conductor of the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida. Before moving to Florida, Dr. McCarty was the Director of Choral Music at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia. While in Virginia, he also conducted the Crozet Community Chorus, the Page County Community Choir, the Main Street Singers, and was the music director at Clover Hill United Methodist Church.
